Slow Casino News Day Means Jonas Brother Blog

joe jonas birthday blackjack

Joe Jonas plays Blackjack so he can’t be all bad.

Yes folks, you read that correctly. We’re blogging about one of the Jonas brothers, specifically Joe Jonas and how he celebrated his 22nd birthday by playing blackjack.

Saturday was the big day for Joe, the middle member of the Jonas Brothers band. Joe did it up right in Vegas beginning at the pool and ending at a nightclub.

The Liquid Pool Lounge played host to the first portion of Joe’s birthday as he partied in the VIP cabanas where he drew a host of female fans. From there it was sushi at the Yellowtail Japanese Restaurant & Lounge at the Bellagio.

Post sushi activities included stopping by the casino for some Blackjack where he was once again surrounded by female fans looking for photos and autographs. Since the obnoxious fans were all up in his grill and messing up his decisions of whether or not to split sevens against a 7 and whether or not to double down with 11 while the dealer is showing a ten, Joe took his chips and left for the Haze Nightclub at Aria.

There Joe took to the stage and played some of his crappy music for his vapid fans. After that he spent the rest of the night chatting up ladies and loving life. Lucky bastard.

Poor John Hewitt. The young Costa Rican poker player became the November Nine bubble boy when he was eliminated in 10th place, just missing the coveted WSOP Main Event Final Table that will be played out in November.

Hewitt came into the 10-handed table with a sizable chip stack that was well over average with 22,3000. But after doubling up a couple competitors he was reduced to the short stack of the table. One such double up saw him push all-in with K-9 and getting called by Badhi Bounahra with pocket kings. With no miracle hitting the board, his stack was cut to just 4 million chips.

Hewitt’s final hand came when he pushed preflop with pocket threes and got called by Eoghan O’Dea with K-J off-suit. O’Dea hit a straight on the turn and the rest is history.

The following November Nine surviving players will return in four months from now and battle for the $8,547,042 first place prize money and the world’s most coveted poker bracelet.

Seat 1: Matt Giannetti (24,750,000)
Seat 2: Badih Bounahra (19,700,000)
Seat 3: Eoghan O’Dea (33,925,000)
Seat 4: Phil Collins (23,875,000)
Seat 5: Anton Makiievskyi (13,825,000)
Seat 6: Samuel Holden (12,375,000)

Sorel Mizzi First to Qualify for Onyx Cup

Sorel Mizzi

Last weekend saw the first online qualifier to the upcoming super high stakes Onyx Cup Series. The online qualifier had a $640 entry fee and drew 124 players who battled it out for the $105,000 first place prize package. Since the field only generated a prize pool of $74,000 players enjoyed the added value of a $26,700 overlay.

The first package went to none other than online poker superstar, Sorel Mizzi aka Imer1um. The poker pro is back playing online only recently as he had previously been banned for nearly three years for multiple reasons including multi-accounting and buying accounts that have gone deep in tournaments.

The Onyx Cup features events with buy-ins ranging from $100,000 to $300,000 with relatively small field of 30 – 50 players expected a seat at the Onyx Cup is a great chance for a huge score of $3 – $5 million. It’s scheduled as a five-stop poker tour with a sixth final Grand Finale tournament with a buy-in of $250,000. The top player across all tournaments will receive the Onyx Cup itself.

Macau Casino Magnate Ends Family Dispute

Stanley Ho

Casino tycoon, Stanley Ho, in happier times.

The on-again, off-again battle between one of the wealthiest men in Hong Kong and some of his children is now off-again. Stanley Ho, whose Macau casino empire is valued at around $1.5 billion.

Ho and his family have now released a statement stating that the dispute is “fully resolved” and that Ho has officially dropped his lawsuit against his family. The dispute and the lawsuit that Ho filed against members of his family asserted they had stolen a portion of his majority holdings in the casino company Scoiedade de Jogos de Macau, or SJM. The apparent end of the dispute is likely a major relief to investors who were seeing stock prices drop over the course of the dispute.

SJM runs 17 casinos, four slot machine lounges and two hotels in Macau. Ho was recently listed in Forbes billionaires list with an estimated casino fortune of $3.1 billion.

Man Find Cash on Casino Floor Charged with Theft

William Dobosh, an 82-year-old Pennsylvania man, made the mistake of picking up $15 that he found on the floor of the casino at The Meadows Race Track and Casino.

Dobosh told reporters that he pocketed the cash after watching a woman throw it on the ground before walking away. Casino officials informed Dobosh that he could not keep the money and ordered him to hand it over but Dobosh refused.

“I never had a ticket in my whole life,” Dobosh said. “I didn’t do nothing wrong, just picked up $5 bills and just walked away.”

Tough break for Dobosh for sure. If he had stuck to playing in an online casino he wouldn’t have to worry about this sort of thing. Check out the Juicy Stakes Casino for all the classic casino games and a whole lot more.

Stanley Ho Recants on Accusations of Family Stealing Casino Assets

Stanley Ho Family

What a rollercoaster that was! Stanley Ho, the 13th richest man in Hong Kong and owner of the lion’s share of casino offerings in the world’s casino mecca of Macau, today recanted his accusations that five of his children and his current wife had stolen his fortune.

It’s tough to say what exactly changed since yesterday when Ho and his lawyer, Gordon Oldham, stated that they were pursuing legal action against Ho’s family members. But today, Ho went on television and stated that his family hadn’t tried to steal anything, that is was all big “misunderstanding” and that he fired his lawyer.

The dust hasn’t entirely settled yet as there are still some pretty big question marks around what happened but one thing that does seem certain is that the five children in question (all born from his third wife) will inherit all of Ho’s casino assets while the rest of his 16 children will apparently go without.

Whereas most family disputes only affect the family itself, a Ho shake-up has real world ramifications as the chaos of the last couple days resulted in the casino company, of which Ho is primary stakeholder, stock prices to drop by 4.9% yesterday, equal to about $480 million in market value.

World Series of Poker Institutes Mandatory Stoppages

One of the many factors that has made the World Series of Poker a notable and challenging tournaments series is the endurance factor. Playing poker for days on end, with some tournaments running until the sun comes up again is not something to be taken lightly. Things have changed however, as that particular aspect of the WSOP is going the way of the dodo bird for the 2011 WSOP. This year play will always be stopped for the day after 10 levels are played

After hitting the 10th level, all surviving players will get their poker chips bagged and logged for the night and that tournament will continue the following morning. According to the WSOP, this stoppage will be mandatory and enforced no matter how many players remain in the tournament.

This new rule should put an end to the late nights that would sometimes see players still competing as the sun came up the following day – a great way to get yourself drained and sick for the rest of the WSOP tournaments.

The 2011 WSOP will take place at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas as usual and the start date has been set for May 31 and will wrap up on July 19 for everyone except the final nine players.

The WSOP $10,000 No Limit Hold’em Main Event structure will not change however, as it will see its Day 1A on July 7. The final November Nine will be established 12 days later on July 19 and there will be no mandatory stop time.

Once the November Nine are established they will return to the Rio, as usual, in November to play it out for the WSOP bracelet, millions of dollars and of course, poker’s greatest honor.

Last year’s winner was Jonathan Duhamel from Quebec, Canada. He beat a field of 7,319 players and returned home with nearly $9 million in cash.

If you’re looking for a seat to the 2011 WSOP you’ll want to keep an eye on Juicy Stakes online poker room which will offer online qualifiers to the WSOP and many more great international poker tournaments.

Biker Steals $1.5 Million in Mostly Useless Casino Chips

Bellagio Biker Robber

The Bellagio robber holds up casino staff for chips.

Considering the amount of security in a Las Vegas casino it’s hard to imagine that people still try to rob them, let alone succeed. Well that’s exactly what happened this week when the Bellagio casino was liberated of $1.5 million in chips.
The perpetrator entered the casino at around 3:50AM wearing a motorcycle helmet and waving a hand gun at some of the casino floor staff who provided him with casino chips ranging in denominations of $100 – $25,000. With the chips in hand he made his getaway on a motorcycle.

The only problem for the biker is that it turns out the that the higher denomination chips have RFID tags in them which means that using them at the casino will alert security to their presence. While it hasn’t been announced what the value of the usable and unusable chips are, chances are that the vast majority are unusable. Consider, for example, how big the bandit’s bag would have to be to hold the chips even just half were in 1,000 and 100 denominations.

Clearly the lion’s share of chips will be unusable unless he’s able to pawn them off on some poor sucker.

The Las Vegas Police Department has recently stated that they believe this biker to be the same person who committed a similar robbery where he made off with $20,000 in chips from the much smaller Las Vegas Suncoast Hotel and Casino poker room last week. The Suncoast Hotel’s chips did not have any RFID tags.

Gus Hansen Is, How You Say, Not So Good At The Online Poker

Gus Hansen

Here is Gus Hansen at a live poker tournament. You can tell it’s not an online poker tournament because there are winnings in front of him.

Here is some startling, startling news from our good friends over at the Cake Poker Blog: Gus Hansen is busting out, badly, in online poker play.

When it comes to playing online poker, Hansen prefers the high-stakes cash games against top competition like Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey. His results in those games have been nearly the total opposite of those he’s compiled in live tournaments. He’s down $7.7 million since the beginning of 2007, making him one of the single biggest losers in the game over that time period, with about $800,000 of that total coming just in 2010.

I almost doubled over after seeing that number. Seven point seven million? There are National Hockey League teams that don’t even spend that much on player salaries (looking at you, Atlanta Thrashers).

Now if you’re like the many people who have read this and assumed that Hansen is flat broke….well, apparently that’s not accurate. Hansen’s live tournament winnings total nearly $7.25 million and there’s still no finite number on what he makes during random live games (and given he blew over seven million playing online poker, it’s fair to suggest that number could be astronomical) endorsement deals and regular-guy business transactions.

Still, though…$7.7 million. That’s a big piece of cake.

Speculation on Harrah’s Cincinnati Casino Runs Moderately Wild

Harrah's

Bright lights? Big city? What can Cincy expect to see?

There’s no shortage of questions being asked with regards to Harrah’s planned casino venture for Cincinnati, Ohio. After recent news passed that Harrah’s would be doing business with Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert for two casinos in the big Ohio markets — Cincy and Cleveland — the local rags have gone somewhat nutty with guesswork as to what the casino will look like. Hey, it’s Cincinnati. You either speculate on future casino developments or watch the Bengals preseason games. Your call.

Anyways, here’s the latest from Cincinnati.com:

Now that the world’s largest casino company has been tapped to run Cincinnati’s future casino, the question becomes: Which of Harrah’s Entertainment’s three marquee casino brands will gamblers here see?

Harrah’s isn’t saying, but industry observers don’t expect to see a Casears Cincinnati. That nameplate is the company’s luxury brand, reserved for markets that specifically court international gamblers. Only four Caesars casinos exist in the world: Las Vegas; Atlantic City; Windsor, Ontario; and Cairo, Egypt.

“I’d be very surprised if they did the Caesars brand in Cincinnati — it’s very high-end,” said Lyle Berman, chief executive of Minnesota-based casino operator Lakes Entertainment, which has an option to buy up to a 10 percent interest in Cincinnati’s casino.

“When you open a casino in Middle America, you want to be all things to everybody,” Berman said. “You want something that appeals to a broad group of people.”

Take that, Middle America! Apparently the red-hot market of Windsor, Ontario can get a Caesar’s, but you can’t.

So instead of an Egyptian-,  Roman- or Gothic-themed casino, you’ll probably be getting a big top and carnie folk running a skee-ball machine you can gamble on.
